Please check back soon for updates! Here are our most recent events. We were very pleased with attendance, which was more than we expected.
We're also planning
to have other events such as a physics movie night, trip to
the PPPL, T-shirts. Let us know if you have an idea for
an event here and check out the links above.
Pizza Lunches with Physics Professors are held on
designated weekdays at 12:30 pm, typically in The Fishbowl
(Jadwin, room 111). PSPS
Pizza Lunches are often the Society's most popular events.
Each lunch features a guest speaker, typically a professor
in the physics department, who will speak on an interesting piece
of their current research. Our hope is that underclassmen can find ways to become involved in research in the department, and upperclassmen can expand their knowledge of the different areas of physics. The Pizza lunches are always run very informally,
and the format can be anything from a prepared
presentation by the guest speaker to a disorganized — or
should we say entropic — chat among attendees, although
there is always ample opportunity for questions from the
audience! The list of professors who have given a talk to us
includes:
- Professor Jason Petta
- Professor Frans Pretorius
- Professor Robert Austin
- Professor William Bialek (biophysics)
- Professor Curt Callan
- Professor Paul Chaikin
- Professor Joe Fowler
- Professor Edward Groth
- Professor William Happer
- Professor Frank von Hippel (Woodrow Wilson School)
- Professor Dan Marlow
- Professor Peter Meyers
- Professor Chiara Nappi
- Professor P. James E. Peebles
- Professor Suzanne Staggs
- Professor Paul Steinhardt
- Professor Chris Tully
- Professor Herman Verlinde
- Professor Ned Wingreen (molecular biology)
- Professor Shivaji Sondhi
- Professor David Huse (condensed matter)
- Professor Neta Bahcall (astronomy)
- Professor Joshua Shaevitz (biophysics)
- Dr. Andrew Leifer, Lewis-Sigler Fellow (biophyiscs)
Some lunches are open to all, while others are of
restricted attendance. They are announced both on the
website and on the PSPS mailing list. Starting December 2012 they are also announced on the PSPS Facebook and Twitter pages.
Ideas for future events:
Physics Society T-Shirt Contest (awaiting judging).
Friday night (or any other time) physics. Members of the
club would hang out in Jadwin for two hours or so, to do
cool physics problems/informally talk about physics
outside the classroom.
Occasional dinners with professors.
Send student members to national APS/SPS meetings.
Informal undergraduate physics lunches.
